In order to mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2018 we are sharing some stories from our singers in regard to how being a member of the choir has a positive impact on their health.
Here is Chris’s Story:
“As a 67 year old retired man, I am fortunate that the high stress levels I endured over the years of a high pressure job in the corporate world are a thing of the past. However, even in retirement, stress and anxiety still exists in one way or another, albeit to a much more manageable degree. Joining Victoria Park Singers has become such a great activity to put the stress of the everyday world behind and lose oneself to the emotion, feel-good and excitement of singing together with likeminded friends.
Although I try to look after my physical health, I have a regard to my mental health and at my age I wanted to keep my brain exercised and challenged. Medical experts agree that learning new skills can minimise the on-set of Dementia and Alzheimer’s and so not only am I meeting and mixing with a broad group of interesting people of all ages, I am also enjoying the buzz of singing and of course, the social side of the post rehearsal beer or two!”
